چکیده

Time-dependent natural weathering processes suffered by historic bricks in Toledo (Spain) improve their physicomechanical properties by porous infill with gypsum, ettringite and mainly calcite. Both, these bricks and their experimental replica bricks, made from the original calcareous clays fired at the probable historical temperatures (700o 900oC), have been analyzed by X-ray diffraction, optical and scanning electron microscopy, mercury intrusion porosimetry and ultrasound velocities to compare pore structure and strength evolution by mineral cementation. The resultant microstructure and mineral fillings depend on brick calcareous composition and firing temperature, the brick location environment, burial, indoor or outdoor walls, the lime-based joint mortars and coat plasters and infiltration waters.

A New Cementation Factor Correlation in Carbonate Parts of Oil Fields in South-West Iran

Petrophysical parameters such as porosity, water and oil saturations, formation resistivity factor, etc. describe the storage capability of the porous media or the capacity of rocks to hold fluids. The modified Archie’s equation . / . , also called the saturation equation, is used to determine the water saturation. Archie’s parameters, namely , , and , are sometimes assumed constant to simp...

High Performance Bricks from Fly Ash

Bricks whose solid ingredient is 100% fly ash have been manufactured. The manufacturing process uses techniques and equipment similar to those used in clay brick factories. The bricks produced were about 28% lighter than clay bricks. The bricks manufactured from fly ash possessed compressive strength higher than 40 MPa. This exceeds some of the best of load carrying clay bricks available by mor...

Investigation of pore-scale random porous media using lattice boltzmann method

The permeability and tortuosity of pore-scale two and three-dimensional random porous media were calculated using the Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). Effects of geometrical parameters of medium on permeability and tortuosity were investigated as well. Two major models of random porous media were reconstructed by computerized tomography method: Randomly distributed rectangular obstacles in a uni...

Cementation of Sand Soil by Microbially Induced Calcite Precipitation at Various Degrees of Saturation

4 A newly emerging microbiological soil stabilization method, known as microbially 5 induced calcite precipitation (MICP), is tested for geotechnical engineering 6 applications. MICP is a promising technique that utilizes the metabolic pathways of 7 bacteria to form calcite precipitation throughout the soil matrix, leading to an increase 8 in soil strength and stiffness. This paper investigates...
